Biography[]
Liu Yan was the Governor of Yi Province, and was the father of Liu Zhang, as well as the uncle of Liu Bei. In AD 184, during the Yellow Turban Rebellion, he called on Liu Bei, Zhang Fei, and Guan Yu to aid him against Cheng Yuanzhi, who was the Yellow Turban commander in his territory. Zhang Fei slew him in one blow, and Liu Yan was able to retain his territory. Though he did not participate in any of the alliances formed against the Ten Eunuchs or Dong Zhuo, he focused on his own affairs to pacify Yi Province. Ren Qi and Chen Chao invaded Yi Province and attacked Chengdu, but Liu Yan defeated and killed the both of them and took supreme command over the province. He died in AD 194, and Liu Zhang became his successor. He would be conquered by Liu Bei twenty years later.
