Biography[]

Ma Zun was the Govnernor of Tianshui, and was a Wei general. In AD 227, Zhuge Liang invaded Wei following the death of Wei Emperor Cao Pi, beginning his First Northern Expedition. His goal was to take the cities of Tianshui, Nan'an, and Anding, so Ma Zun, Yang Ling, and Cui Lan prepared to fight against his invasion. Ma Zun had a great strategist named Jiang Wei, as well as two other officers named Yi Shang and Liang Xu. Jiang Wei planned to watch Zhuge Liang closely to observe his strategies, yet Ma Zun ordered him to attack out of the castle rather than wait. Jiang Wei's men were killed around him, but he was not killed; the Shu were using a ploy. Ma Zun began to distrust Jiang Wei, and shut the gates of Ji Castle on him. Trapped between Jicheng and Zhuge Liang's army, Jiang Wei surrendered, and got Liang Xu and Yi Shang to follow him. Ma Zun suffered a defeat, and fled to the Hu Territory, too embarassed to face the court.
